Liability Issues In Public Education

Course Description:
This course will cover current issues in public education for teachers, school counselors or school administrators and those students interested in pursuing careers in public education. Topics include student rights, teacher rights, union matters, litigation issues and school safety. These are topics that must be understood in order to be able to correctly evaluate school climate, and to help to maximize student achievement. At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to identify ethics, union and safety issues relevant to teachers and students, and to evaluate a school’s climate. They should also be able to locate current education case law, and to interpret that case law as it relates to teaching, counseling or administration situations. They should further be able to produce case briefs. Finally, participants should be able to use case law to analyze and assess criminal and civil risk as it relates to students, teachers and administrators. (LEC)
