Academic Writing Institute (AWC)
Offering Courses for Graduate Students and Students Enrolled in Professional Studies Programs
If you are writing a research paper, thesis, dissertation, or scholarly publication,
AWC has courses for you.
The Academic Writing Institute was established in response to graduate students' increasing concern about the need for courses that meet their specific writing needs: research papers, masters theses, doctoral dissertations, scholarly publications, academic essays, and ESL challenges.
The institute is committed to helping students at the graduate and professional levels of study develop proficiency in scholarly writing.
We offer three unique courses:

Writing the Academic Essay
Writing the Academic Essay
In this course, participants will learn how to:

Apply the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and final copy)

Organize essays and longer papers (introduction, body, and conclusion)

Form a thesis statement

Develop main ideas and supporting details
-
Transition from paragraph to paragraph

Overcome common errors in sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and word usage

Document sources

Students may bring current papers to class
Class dates: June 15, 22, 29, July 6
Classes meet one evening a week for 4 weeks

In this course, participants will learn how to overcome major challenges encountered by multilingual writers in the following categories:

Overcome specific writing challenges common to ESL speakers: articles, verbs, sentence structure, word usage, prepositions, participles, punctuation and mechancis

Payment of program fees and refund policies
Course fees are listed with each course found in noncredit course schedule. Students registered for noncredit courses may receive a full refund if our office is notified in writing prior to the first day of class. Noncredit course fees will not be refunded starting with the first day of class.

MFC 193 Essentials of Academic Writing (3 credits)
Essentials of Academic Writing is a WEB course designed for students who desire to improve their writing skills for college success. In this course, students will learn the writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing); organizing (introduction with thesis statement, body, and conclusion); developing ideas into paragraphs and supporting details; transitiong from paragraph to paragraph,; articulating a message clearly; and applying the correct use of grammer, sentence structure, mechanics, word choice, and punctuation.
